The San Francisco Giants and relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt agreed on a two year contract Monday afternoon. Affeldt became the first free agent to sign with a new team this offseason when he agreed to the $8 million dollar contract.

The 29-year-old Affeldt pitched for the Cincinnati Reds last season, going 1-1 with a 3.33 ERA in a team-leading 74 appearances. He struck out 80 and walked 25 in 78 1/3 innings. The Giants will be counting on Affeldt throwing a lot of innings as they need a lot of help in the bullpen.

Expect some more signings by Giants management this off season.

The San Francisco Giants have their minds set on some off the free agents including Joe Beimel, Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Bob Howry, Juan Cruz, Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, and C.C. Sabathia. MLB.Com reporter Chris Haft mentioned these names in his most recent artcle.

I can see the Giants going after the likes of Beimel, Blake, Howry, and Cruz but the rest of the players I just don’t see them spending that kind of money for.

Giants Rumors

Congratulations to San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum who won the 2008 National League Cy Young Award on Tuesdsay afternoon. Lincecum earned 23 of 32 first place votes as he became the second Giants pitcher to win the award. Mike McCormick won the award clear back in 1967.

Lincecum was 18-5 with a 2.62 ERA and a major league-best 265 strikeouts. He was very deserving of the award with those types of numbers!

Great job Mr. Lincecum!
